Green Glass Sea

Dewey Kerrigan is moving to New Mexico with her dad. He is going to work on a top secret project for the government. Dewey is not looking forward to this because she has trouble making friends. For one thing she loves science and is so smart that she understands topics on a adult level. In addition, when she was younger, she was in an accident and broke her leg. The leg didn't heal correctly so one leg is shorter than the other. She feels like a misfit. She would love to talk to her dad -but he is always working - and he can't talk about what he is working on. We have this book on Playaway too.

Sequel is "White Sands, Red Menace"

Chains

Chains Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Isabelle and her sister are promised freedom by their master when she dies. However after their master's death, her relative refuses their freedom, and they are sold to new masters called the Locktons. The Locktons live in New York at the beginning of the Revolutionary War and they are loyal to the British throne (Tories). They are incredibly cruel and Mrs. Lockton is mentally unstable.

Isabelle meets another slave, Curzon, and he tried to convince Isabelle to spy on the Locktons for his master, a man loyal to the Colonies (Patriot). Does she spy and if so, does she get caught? A very gripping novel. Once you start, you'll finish in one sitting.

The planned sequel is called "Forged" - tentatively due in Fall 2010.

Savvy

The Beaumont family has a secret. When you turn 13, you get a supernatural power. They call it your "Savvy". Examples of this power include controlling the weather or controlling electricity. Mibs (short for Mississippi) is about to turn 13 and like all the Beaumonts, she doesn't know what her power will be. In addition to the stress of getting her Savvy, her father has been in a terrible accident and is in the hospital. Mibs is sure that her new power will help her father - but will it? Savvy is an amazing story, full of unexpected surprises. It was a Newbery Honor winner for 2009.
