Ivy and Bean

Ivy and Bean (Ivy and Bean, Book 1) Ivy and Bean by Annie Barrows

This is one of my favorite early chapter book series for girls. Bean "Bernice" is a tomboy. She is always getting into everything. Ivy has moved across the street and Bean thinks she is boring because she always wears a dress and has her nose in a book. After she meets Ivy, Bean realizes that she has been wrong about Ivy and they become best friends. Ivy and Bean get in trouble together - a lot!

A Great Chapter Book Resource

Betsy Bird is a Librarian in NYC and she has an amazing blog called Fuse 8 Productions. This month she is counting down the top 100 chapter books of all time. She did this by asking her readers to send in their top ten most favorite books. It's a huge undertaking just to get the list together - but she doesn't stop there!! She provides reviews, copies of the different covers and lots of other fun stuff. In addition, people comment on the lists as they come out (she does 5 books at a time) This is a must see list!!!!!

Claudette Colvin

Claudette Colvin: Twice Toward Justice Claudette Colvin: Twice Toward Justice by Phillip M. Hoose

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Everyone knows about Rosa Parks, but what everyone doesn't know is that Ms. Parks wasn't the first to refuse to give up her seat. Ms. Colvin, at the time a teenager, was the first to refuse and she was arrested and jailed for her bravery. In addition, she was a plaintiff in a federal lawsuit in which it was ultimately ruled that segreation on buses was a a violation of the 14th amendment. An amazing story and a 2010 Newbery Honor book.
