Claudette Colvin: Twice Toward Justice by Phillip M. Hoose
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Everyone knows about Rosa Parks, but what everyone doesn't know is that Ms. Parks wasn't the first to refuse to give up her seat. Ms. Colvin, at the time a teenager, was the first to refuse and she was arrested and jailed for her bravery. In addition, she was a plaintiff in a federal lawsuit in which it was ultimately ruled that segreation on buses was a a violation of the 14th amendment. An amazing story and a 2010 Newbery Honor book.
